Basic Info
Name:Rear-Admiral Horatio Hornblower
Bio

"To be a Commander-in-Chief, with nothing more to worry about than the suppression of the slave trade, the hunting down of piracy, and the policing of the Caribbean, was an experience more pleasant than any Emperor, or even any poet, could ever know."

Horatio Hornblower is 18th Century British Navy Love.
made by [info]timorousbeastie.

"He himself had been a dashing young officer once. Now he had far more sympathy than ever before with the older men who had entrusted him with enterprises."

Character Demographics:
Fandom: Hornblower (from the series of novels by C.S. Forester)
Name: Rear-Admiral Horatio Hornblower (I can’t be bothered adding all the extra titles, but they’re there.)
Age: late forties? (chronologically speaking, at any rate.)
Physical Appearance: The ‘time jump’ has rendered him looking pretty much as he did when he was a young captain. Tall and lanky, with medium-dark brown curly hair, brown eyes. And of course, the all-important Royal Navy uniform (which by this stage has plenty of gold braid added on).
Education: Horatio received a classical education as a child, and is well versed in Greek and Latin. He also knows French, and picked up Spanish during his naval career.
Occupation: Commander-in-chief of the West Indies station (ie. the Caribbean). Currently finds himself in Helsa as Lord Horatio, Baron of Smallbridge – influential landowner and local magistrate.
Significant Other: happily married to Lady Barbara Wellesey (not in Helsa, sadly.)
Sexual Preference: straight.

Character Biography:
History: Horatio Hornblower has come a long way since the days when he first entered the Navy as a young inexperienced (and rather seasick) midshipman. Born in Kent as the only son of a doctor, he wanted to go to sea as long as he could remember. He finally got his chance when he was accepted onboard the HMS Justinian, due to her captain being an old friend of his father’s. His naval career progressed fairly rapidly after that (see this for a more complete description -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horatio_Hornblower), up to the current moment, where he is a Rear-Admiral and Commander-in-chief of the West Indies, happily married to Lady Barbara Wellesey, with a string of titles after his name. Or rather, he was.

At some point in time, he has been removed from his time stream, and lands in the Helsa world, where he has no recollection of his previous life. Yet.

(He’s been taken from his ‘timestream’ during the period described in Hornblower in the West Indies; probably while still on active duty:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hornblower_in_the_West_Indies)

Personality in seven words or less: introvert(though not so much as before), sense of duty, innovative, desire to succeed, afraid of heights, a bit of a perfectionist, card sharp.
How Others Perceive Your Character: Horatio is often described by those who live and work in Smallbridge as “eccentric” and “perfectionist”, but he’s also known as a fair and just lord. He’s quite content to let most people think of him as that ‘peppery old gentleman’ – but his closest friends know otherwise.
Beliefs, Convictions, Morals: At heart, Horatio is still a bit of an introvert, prone to occasional moments of introspection, though by this stage in his life he has grown more comfortable with himself – though still not comfortable enough to show what he considers ‘weaknesses’ for all to see. He has a strong sense of duty, and the desire to succeed in whatever he does – usually involving him taking a direct control in events. He’s quite unusual for a fairly high ranking flag officer in that he will not hesitate to get involved in skirmishes. A brilliant strategist, whose often outrageous gambits and plans are successful – to the surprise of others. Perhaps this is why he’s such a good card player? He seems to have quite a flair for mathematics as well, and is philosophically opposed to flogging and capital punishment.
Reason(s) for Escaping to Canada: Horatio encountered the ‘Aternaville group’ in Helsa, where he realised that he didn’t really belong there, as well as remembering the full details of his ‘past life’. Upon which he follows them when they return to Aternaville.
Their DHAs [Dreams, Hopes, and Aspirations] for Canada: to try and figure out this strange new world, and figure out how (if at all) to return back home. Also to avoid mentioning anything about Norrington’s future (seeing as Hornblower is set around 50 or so years after POTC, and being stationed in the Caribbean – he’d be bound to come across some mention of the good Commodore somewhere or another, though by then Port Royal had been sunk in an earthquake?)

Twenty-Questions for the Characters:

[Note: These can be one word answers or fragments. If any of you've seen Lipton's 'ITAS' you know how this works]

1. What turns them on: sailing
2. What turns them off: having nothing to do.
3. Would they see a shrink: not a chance – though I dare say said shrink would have had a field day with him, in his younger years…
4. Worst Childhood experience: being excited about going on his first sea voyage – and then being seasick throughout the entire trip.
5. Favorite Film: I’d say something like Master and Commander – except that would be sort of like watching a documentary for him ^_^
6. Favorite Song: none. The man’s tone deaf and can’t even distinguish between national anthems, let alone any other song.
7. Favorite Word: duty – or more specifically, the doing of.
8. Least Favorite Word: down. Especially when paired with the word look. As in “whatever you do, Horatio, don’t look down!”
9. Favorite Curse Word: bloody hell, damned, by George. Probably a few choice others as well.
10. Best gift ever received: his current wife Barbara, and the friendship of Archie Kennedy and William Bush. (look – he’s getting all sentimental in his later years, aww…)
11. Sound or Noise they hate: music (the poor boy can’t help it if he’s tone deaf, right?)
12. Sound or Noise they love: when one of his plans work. Or playing a good game of whist.
13. Do they know the answer to 64 million dollar question: Not yet…but give him a few minutes and he’ll have a plan worked out. And if all else fails, he could get his brother-in-law Arthur Wellesey to pull some strings…
14. [Complete the sentence] ... All the world's a stage...and…damnitall, I forgot the rest of that. Shakespeare’s not really my expertise, you know?
15. Did Yoko Ono really break up the Fab Four: ah, er…oh my, is that the French? I’d better be off! *disappears*
16. Chuck Norris or Bruce Lee: Admiral Pellew.
17. Half full or half empty: half empty.
18. Coke or Pepsi: he’d much rather prefer a pint of ale and a good game of whist.
19. If they were a Jellybean flavor, which one: turnip (just to annoy Bush, more than anything else.)
20. And, finally, if Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates? “Archie and William would like a few words with you. Something about owing them a couple hundred games of whist? And no, you will not be required to climb a mountain to get to them.”

"Her ladyship told you to see that I took my meals regularly," replied Hornblower. "I am aware of that. But Her Ladyship, owing to her inexperience, made no allowance for encounters with fast-sailing slavers just at meal-times."

[ not real. this is for a game, [info]aternaville.]
